Henan folklore: the origin of the word "businessman"

In ancient times, people didn't use fire, and food was eaten raw. Sometimes fires break out in the mountains and some animals are burned to death. People picked it up and tasted it, thinking that the cooked food was more delicious than the raw one, so they caught some animals, picked some wild fruits and burned them in the fire.

But at that time, people couldn't make their own fires, so they had to rely on the fire in the sky. Where the forest caught fire, they got some kindling from there and brought it back to keep it so as not to let it go out.

Once, Zhuan Xu saw people here eating raw food and asked them why they didn't eat cooked food. Cooked food is delicious.

Everyone said, "We have no fire here."

Zhuan Xu said, "Then go outside and look for fire."

Someone said, "I have looked for it, but firewood can't supply water, and it is always flooded, so fire can't survive."

King Zhuan Xu sighed and thought: Who can attract the fire and find a way to keep it from going out?

After thinking about it, he thought of his son and Kui Bo. King Zhuan Xu appointed Kui Bo here, specializing in fire control management, with the title of "Shang".

Kui Bo is very clever. He thinks of many ways to control fire. Isn't fire afraid of flooding? He led everyone to build a big mound, sent people everywhere to look for fire, and put the found fire on the mound.

In order to prevent the fire from being doused by rain, he led everyone to build a high shed on the fire, so that the fire could live forever.

What should I do if the firewood for the fire is not available? Kui Bo asked people to take some local fruits, skins and other things to exchange firewood in other places. Since they came from Shangdi, later generations called them "businessmen". This is also the origin of the word "businessman" today.

Keep the fire, people here no longer eat raw food. Everyone went to other places to exchange firewood, which also opened our eyes. Later, they not only exchanged firewood, but also everything they needed.

Kui Bo manages the business well, and the people live a good life and respect him very much. After Kui Bo died, people buried him on the mound where kindling was stored. Every year, ordinary people fill the grave of Kan Bo.

As a result, the tomb grew bigger and bigger, because the title of Shu Bo was Shang, so everyone called this mound Shangqiu, which is also the origin of the name Shangqiu today. Later, people built a temple on this big mound, with a statue of Bo standing on the tree, honoring him as Vulcan, and designated the seventh day of the first lunar month as Vulcan Festival. On this day every year, the local people hold a general meeting.
