Recently, Guan Enwei, a teacher from Xiaoyao Village, Yuli Town, Wulian County, showed several family letters he had collected for decades, which were written by Guan Ronghua, the grandson of Guan Tinggang, one of Guan's "Five Scholars", and were written to his sisters Guan Rongfen and Guan Enwei respectively.

The full text of Guan Ronghua's letter to his sister Rongfen is:

Sister Rong Fen: I miss you from time to time since parting. It's good that you all want to come! I have been married for more than 30 years, and now there are five women and one man. The boy is the youngest, and now he is eighteen. He graduated from this high school in June this year and entered the University of California in September. He is very tall, probably like his uncle's family. Our family has been in the United States for many years, and the eldest girl got married and gave birth to a granddaughter. Two women are working here, unmarried. Three daughters are married to work with her husband. They live near my house and have not yet had children. Four or five women are all in college, and they do things for their own pocket money in their spare time. I've always been in good health, and so have your siblings, but my hair is white. I'm fifty-eight after all. Rongqin married a Cantonese, and it is reported that she died in Guangdong. Ronghui married and gave birth to a son and a daughter, and Rongying married and gave birth to a son and a daughter. They are all fine. I have retired from studying medicine.

I don't know if you can receive this letter. Please reply as soon as you receive it so as not to miss it. To health.

  Di Rong Hua Shang

  August 29, 1979

According to Guan Ronghua's third daughter Guan Ende, her father studied in Shandong Medical College in Sichuan in his early years, then went to Taiwan Province, and then his family went to the United States. This letter was written in August 1979, shortly after the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, in the early stage of reform and opening up. Guan Rongfen and Guan Ronghua haven't met each other for a long time, and they haven't written to each other. Therefore, Guan Ronghua first expressed his thoughts in his letter, then introduced his family situation in detail, and finally expressed his urgency in expecting the reply from Third Sister.

This letter is short in words, but it is full of Guan Ronghua's feelings of missing his motherland, homeland and relatives. According to Guan Ende, her father often told her about Xiaoyao Village, her hometown, the "Flower Exploration House" and Guan's ancestral temple, and told her that she would have the opportunity to visit relatives and worship her ancestors in her hometown.

Guan Ronghua has five daughters and one son: Zhengsu, Enming, Ende, Enxin, Enmei and Enguang. As can be seen from the names, except for the eldest daughter, all the names have the word "En", and all the four children of Guan Enguang have the word "Jade". According to Guan Ende, the order of family generations is Ting, Xiang, Rong, En and Yu. The author told her that the order of generations in my hometown is Ting, Xiang, Rong, En, Ren, Xi and Yu. She explained that her father was with two aunts all the year round, and there were no clansmen nearby, so she might have misremembered the words for generations. However, it can be seen from these names that despite living overseas for a long time, the Guan family's feelings of home and country remain the same, and they always miss their homeland and nostalgia.
