Normal temperature superconductivity is "hot crazy"! Conceptual persistence geometry?

At present, materials with superconducting properties have been widely used in electronic communication, transportation, national defense and military, electric power and energy, medical research and other fields, and their application prospects are broad. However, the realization of superconducting properties has strict requirements on the environment and other factors, which also makes superconductivity under normal temperature and pressure enter people's field of vision.

According to the news of Cailian and other media, a research team in South Korea uploaded a paper on the pre-printed website arXiv, saying that a copper-doped lead apatite material named LK-99 has the superconducting ability of "room temperature+atmospheric pressure" and is the first superconducting material at room temperature and atmospheric pressure in the world. In addition, in the early morning of August 1st, Beijing time, American Taj Quantum Company also released photos in official website, saying that a room temperature superconducting material was newly discovered, and its upper temperature limit can reach 150 degrees Celsius.

The scientific community does not recognize it?

Why does the world pay so much attention to room temperature and atmospheric pressure superconductivity? As the name implies, this is related to the characteristics that superconductivity is difficult to achieve under normal conditions.

Zheshang Securities pointed out in the relevant research report that the current application of superconducting materials is limited to low temperature and high pressure environment, and the transition temperature of most superconducting materials is below 40K (minus 233 degrees). At present, only copper oxide superconductors and nickel oxide superconductors break through this transition temperature. If room temperature and atmospheric pressure superconducting materials make a breakthrough, it will bring about changes in many fields, such as energy, transportation, computing, medical testing and so on.

However, in the view of some researchers, the existing information may not support the argument that LK-99 can realize superconducting at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

According to the reports of CBN and other media, Hong Zhiyong, director of Shanghai Superconducting Materials and Systems Engineering Research Center and expert in superconducting application research, said at an internal conference call of Soochow Electronics that according to the existing situation, the testing means and methods reported by the Korean team are not very orthodox superconducting material verification experiments. Hong Zhiyong said that from the papers published by the team, the test methods are different from the current superconducting material verification tests, and the test methods and data presentation methods are too rough to confirm whether the material really has superconducting properties.

Hong Zhiyong also pointed out that the synthesis of LK-99 superconducting material is simple. Only through synthesis and doping, a new material with superconducting properties at room temperature was found in lead apatite compounds that should not have obvious electromagnetic properties.

Is the stock market hot first? There are precedents.

In fact, shortly after the publication of LK-99-related papers, one of the members of the paper creation team said that the paper was flawed and was published by a member of the team without authorization. At present, the team has requested that the paper be removed. However, this does not seem to prevent the A-share superconducting concept from being heated by the market. According to statistics, Dongcai's superconducting concept index rose more than 8% from August 1 ST to 2 nd, and some stocks even closed their daily limit for two consecutive days, and the 20cm daily limit also appeared.

However, after the announcement of the news, some companies urgently rumored that they did not involve the room temperature superconducting business.

According to Time Finance's report, the head of the securities department of Bailey Electric said on August 2nd, "That (room temperature superconductivity) has nothing to do with us". The company's 2022 annual report shows that superconducting power technology is its forward-looking technological innovation business, and its holding subsidiary, Beijing Yingna Superconducting Technology Co., Ltd., is an early established enterprise specializing in the research and development of high-temperature superconducting materials in China. In this regard, the above-mentioned person in charge further stated that the company's business involves high temperature superconductivity, but it is not the main business.

The national cable inspection, which belongs to the concept of superconductivity, also disclosed the change announcement on the evening of August 2, saying that the company's main business is to provide professional technical services such as inspection and testing of wires, cables and optical fibers and cables, and HTS cable inspection belongs to one of the inspection fields that the company can provide. HTS cable runs at MINUS 196 degrees Celsius, which has nothing to do with the concept of normal temperature superconductivity. At present, the company has no technology related to the concept of room temperature superconductivity, and has not generated income.

In fact, there was a precedent for similar changes in the concept of superconductivity this year.

Back to March 8 this year, a team at the University of Rochester announced that it had found a new material that could realize "near atmospheric pressure" room temperature superconductivity. After the news was announced, superconducting concept stocks rose sharply the next day, and Yongding shares and Bailey Electric had daily limit. Not only that, according to the report of science and technology innovation board Daily at that time, the related rumors not only ignited the market, but also made the popularity of rights protection groups soar ahead of schedule. Just on the evening of March 8, various screenshots of "Normal Temperature Superconducting Rights Protection Groups" were circulated on social platforms, and more than 200 people joined in several groups within an hour, but the news in the group was hard to tell.

Not only that, netizens are also ridiculing the concept of superconductivity. According to the report of Cailian, some netizens quipped after the news of LK-99 was announced that it took 180 years for human beings to discover conductors and superconductors, 120 years for them to discover superconductivity and 60 minutes for A-shares to discover room-temperature superconductivity and realize controlled fusion. In addition, some netizens joked that "the singular number determines the scientific and technological content".

  Brokers "not sure"?

Judging from the public information, it is not only investors who have mixed attitudes towards the concept of superconductivity, but also brokers.

According to the report of CBN, Guo Ming Ti, an analyst of Tianfeng International Securities, pointed out in a related tweet that although there is no timetable for the commercialization of normal temperature and pressure superconductors, the superconducting characteristics will subvert the existing product design and the adoption of materials and technologies. Even a mobile device as small as an iPhone may have the computing power comparable to a quantum computer, which will have a subversive impact on product design in the field of consumer electronics.

Soochow securities electronics team's point of view is different. The team believes that room temperature superconducting materials are far from commercialization, and it takes some time for experimental results to go from laboratory to commercial application. The phenomenon of low temperature superconductivity was not mature in the field of medical nuclear magnetic resonance until the 1980 s; High-temperature superconducting materials were discovered in the late 1980s, and it was not until 35 years later that they entered the market application because of the complicated preparation process. At present, the preparation cost of room temperature superconducting materials is high, the batch processing technology has not yet been formed, and the stability of use still needs a lot of verification.

In this regard, the team believes that even if the room temperature superconducting material is verified, the commercialization landing time of room temperature superconducting can not be judged. At present, low-temperature superconductivity and high-temperature superconductivity are still the main superconducting technologies that can realize large-scale commercialization in the industry.

To sum up, the realization of room temperature superconductivity may have broad application prospects, but considering the technical progress and the difficulty of realization, there are still risks in participating in related concepts in the A-share market. When selecting listed companies, investors still need to focus on fundamentals, and do not blindly follow them.
