Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk and NVIDIA formed the OpenUSD Alliance.

"Perception technology, feeling CG, feeling art and feeling the soul"

China is very influential in film and television special effects CG animation field from the media.

Recently, Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk and NVIDIA, the five major companies in CG industry, launched an organization called OpenUSD Alliance (AOUSD), which is a newly established organization to guide the future development of Pixar's open source Universal Scene Description technology.

In addition to Pixar itself, AOUSD's founding members include Adobe, Apple, Autodesk and NVIDIA, while Epic Games, Foundry, SideFX and Unity will join as ordinary members.

The goals of the alliance include laying the foundation for OpenUSD to become an international standard and expanding it from the technology of entertainment industry to "meeting the needs of new industries".

VFX and animation standards are currently being adopted outside the entertainment industry.

Universal Scene Description(USD format) was developed by Pixar internally and opened in 2016, and has become the main part of the visual effects, animation and game development pipeline.

USD is now supported by almost all DCC software applications on the market. Earlier this year, it was officially renamed as OpenUSD, and it is now being adopted by other industries.

A key factor in this expansion is Omniverse, an online 3D design and collaboration platform based on USD. Last year, NVIDIA announced that it would "expand USD's capabilities beyond visual effects" and extend them to the markets touched by NVIDIA Omniverse, including the digital twins of construction, manufacturing and industry.

Supported by many CG software developers.

AOUSD's founding members are basically the same as the original planned partners: Pixar, Autodesk, Adobe and NVIDIA, as well as Apple.

Ordinary members to join include Cesium, Epic Games, Foundry, SideFX and Unity.

Other technology companies can join the alliance, provided that they are members of the Linux Foundation and pay a general membership fee of $10,000 per year.

Supervise the development of OpenUSD to international standards.

AOUSD's initial goals include developing written specifications for the core functions of OpenUSD. This work will enable "other standards bodies to incorporate their specifications"-the first step to make OpenUSD an international standard recognized by ISO.

The alliance will also provide a forum for the "definition of technology-enhanced cooperation".

But is this a good thing for CG artists?

So how should CG practitioners view these changes? Will expanding OpenUSD to meet the needs of new industries directly benefit them? Or just expand the format with functions that VFX doesn't need to work?

This is a question that the media put to Steve May, Chairman of AOUSD and Chief Technology Officer of Pixar, at the press conference. He admitted that the adoption of OpenUSD in other industries may be a "double-edged sword" and commented: "This is very exciting for us at Pixar, but it is also a bit scary."

He believes that "the purpose of establishing an alliance ... is not to [make OpenUSD clumsy], but to benefit from other industries". "The history of computer graphics, computer animation and visual effects is borrowed from other industries." . "I think it will be of great benefit if it is done well."
