The China Meteorological Bureau released the Annual Report on Polar Climate Change for the first time, and the warming of the Arctic accelerated.

The Beijing News (Reporter Wang Jingxi) On August 3, the China Meteorological Bureau released the "Annual Report on Polar Climate Change (2022)" for the first time. The communique shows that in the past 40 years, the warming rate of the Arctic has been 3.7 times that of the same period in the world; In 2022, the overall average temperature in the Arctic was 1.10℃ higher than normal.

Zhang Xingying, deputy director of the Department of Science, Technology and Climate Change of China Meteorological Bureau, said that the polar region has always been regarded as a stabilizer of the global climate system, which plays a very important role in the formation of global atmospheric circulation and weather and climate, and the exchange of heat, momentum and water between the northern and southern hemispheres.

Polar region is also a sensitive area and amplifier of global climate change, and its climate and atmospheric environment changes will have a significant impact on the global weather and climate and the sustainable development of national economy. In recent years, polar climate change has attracted great attention from scientific community, government, society and scientific community.

The Annual Report on Polar Climate Change (2022) provides the latest observation measures and long-term change trend evaluation results of polar temperature, extreme weather and climate events, sea ice, major greenhouse gases and total ozone, and reflects the basic situation of polar climate change scientifically and objectively, hoping to give objective information to the public and all sectors of society and promote joint measures to deal with climate change.

The annual report shows that the warming of the Arctic has accelerated in recent 40 years, and its overall warming rate reached 0.63℃/decade from 1979 to 2022, which was 3.7 times that of the global warming rate in the same period. In 2022, the overall average temperature in the Arctic was 1.10℃ higher than normal. "The Antarctic temperature has not changed much compared with the average climate, but this does not mean that the climate change in the Antarctic region can be ignored. In fact, the Antarctic is still warming at a rate far exceeding the global average." Zhang Xingying said.

Since the 1970s, the Antarctic sea ice range has experienced a long-term slow growth and then began to decrease rapidly in 2014. According to the data of China's independent Fengyun-3 polar-orbiting meteorological satellite series, the monthly average of Antarctic sea ice range in February and September 2022 is 23.84% and 2.96% smaller than normal, and the summer sea ice range is the lowest in history. The Arctic sea ice continued to melt rapidly in summer. On September 18th, 2022, the Arctic sea ice area was 4.67×106 square kilometers, which was generally less.
